Seeing Anita standing there, frozen in shock, Shiva grew tense.
"Anita."
"Hmm?"
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
"What did that monk say to you before he left?"
"Well..."
"It’s okay, tell me."
"He said we should leave this place immediately."
"And if we don't?"
"He said it’s dangerous."
Shiva was stunned by her words. "Why would he say something like that?"
"I don't know, Shiva."
"Do you think he's just some fraud?"
"It didn't feel like that," she replied.
"How can you tell?"
"He didn't ask us for anything. He said his piece and left without even waiting for a response."
"Hmm." Shiva grew thoughtful and confused.
"Shiva?"
"Yes?"
"What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing. Shall we go eat?"
"Okay."
They stepped out and began walking along the Round.
"Anita."
"Hmm?"
"Aren't you scared?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because you're with me," she said with a smile. Shiva’s face brightened instantly.
They entered Pathans Restaurant and took a seat.
"What are you having, Shiva?"
"Idli is fine."
"Shiva, you eat idli all the time. Try some Kerala food here."
"Alright, okay."
Anita placed the order. "Two sets of Puttu and Kadala Curry."
"Any tea or coffee?" the server asked.
"Two Kattan Chaya."
"Anita," Shiva interjected. "What’s Kattan Chaya?"
"Black tea."
"Malayalam seems pretty easy!"
"It is. By the time you leave here, you’ll be speaking it fluently," she teased. Shiva smiled.
"What's the plan next, Anita?"
"Athirappilly Falls."
Shiva’s face lit up again. "Can we bathe there?"
"Yes."
"Then let's head back to the flat, change, and head out."
"Sounds good, Shiva."
"Anita," Shiva said as they waited. "When is your birthday?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Just tell me."
"August 24th."
"That’s next month!"
"Yeah. What about yours, Shiva?"
"November 27th."
"You know, they say people born under numbers 3, 6, and 9 understand each other easily."
"I don't follow."
"You’re November 27th—that adds up to 9. I’m 24—that’s 6. They say 6 and 9 are a perfect match."
Shiva beamed. "You know numerology?"
"A little."
The server brought the food and they began to eat.
"This Puttu and Kadala curry is great, Anita."
"Everyone here eats chickpeas in the morning. Our hometown's black sundal is their staple 'Kadala' here."
"I see."
"There's a reason for it, you know," she added mischievously.
"What?"
"The women here know that if they give the men powerful, nutritious food, the men will take good care of them."
Anita said it with a smirk, and Shiva burst out laughing. "Really? Or is that a joke?"
"It's true, Shiva. If you include black chickpeas in your diet often, life stays happy."
"I'm impressed, Anita. You know so much."
"We only get one life, Shiva. If it isn't lived right, what’s the point?"
"You're right. Shall we go?"
"Yes."
Fifteen minutes later, they reached their apartment. When Anita emerged in blue jeans and a yellow top, Shiva was floored. He found it impossible to look away.
"Anita."
"Hmm?"
"You are gorgeous."
"Thanks, Shiva."
As they stepped out, a light drizzle began to fall. "The climate is lovely," Shiva remarked, and Anita nodded in agreement.
"How long will it take?"
"About an hour and a half of driving. Then we park and walk from the bottom to the top."
"A long walk?"
"About a kilometer."
"Oh."
"Why? Can't you walk that much, Shiva?"
"No, I was just asking."
They got into the car, and Shiva accelerated as they hit the highway.
"Shiva, put some music on."
"Album songs?"
"Just normal songs."
Shiva played a track. As the song Anarkali by A.R. Rahman filled the car, Anita closed her eyes and drifted into the melody. Shiva watched her out of the corner of his eye as he drove.
"What a song," she whispered.
"You like it that much?"
"Yeah, it’s a different kind of melody. Very haunting."
"I like it too."
"The lyrics are superb... 'I lost myself at the point where laughter and tears meet.' Brilliant, isn't it?"
Shiva smiled. "Yes."
"Shiva?"
"Hmm?"
"I’m going to ask you something, and you have to tell me the truth."
"Go ahead."
"What did you really think of me when I said I wanted us to live together before getting married?"
Shiva laughed. "Tell me the truth, don't just laugh it off."
"At first, I was shocked. I wondered how someone could think or act like that. But after thinking about it over and over, I processed it and understood."
"I see."
An hour later, they turned left toward Athirappilly Falls. They parked and began the trek. Within a short distance, Shiva was huffing.
"What happened, Shiva?"
"You said one kilometer, but you didn't say it was a mountain climb!"
Anita laughed. "Want to sit for a bit?"
"No, let’s go."
They kept walking until they reached a spot where the waterfall roared down in all its majesty. They stood for a moment, lost in the view.
"We have to climb down there to bathe," Anita pointed.
Shiva, now excited, started heading down. "Careful, Shiva!"
In his eagerness, Shiva almost slipped on a mossy rock but caught his footing at the last second. He reached a spot where the spray hit him with full force. The cold water was exhilarating. He gave Anita a thumbs-up and signaled for her to join him.
Anita hesitated, but as he called again, she moved toward him. He reached out his hand. She took it, and he pulled her close, embracing her. The waterfall drenching them felt like a celebratory song.
Shiva held her tight. Since it was still morning, they were alone, which suited him perfectly.
"Anita," Shiva called softly.
"Hmm?"
He turned her toward him, cradling her beautiful face in both his hands. To him, her face, glistening with the mist of the falls, looked more radiant than ever. He kissed her forehead, her cheeks, and her nose.
As his lips brushed against her skin, her eyes fluttered shut. Anita’s lips parted slightly in anticipation, and understanding her silent plea, his lips met hers in a deep embrace.
