After offering their prayers at the Mammiyoor Shiva Temple, Siva and Anita returned straight to their flat. Miraculously, the rain had paused, leaving a brief clearing in the sky.
"Siva, can I sleep for a bit? I’m exhausted," Anita said. Siva nodded in agreement.
As Anita retreated to the bedroom, Siva checked the kitchen. There were plenty of vessels, and the gas cylinder wasn’t empty. Why keep eating out every time? he thought. I should just cook.
He decided to get to work but peeked into the bedroom first.
"Come in, Siva," Anita smiled.
"You sleep. I’ll handle lunch today, Anita."
"Wow, really?"
"Mhm."
"Why take the risk?" she teased.
"Taste it first, then talk."
"What do you like?" Siva asked. She looked at him with a blooming smile.
"You," she said.
Caught off guard, Siva smiled. He walked over, leaned down, and kissed her lips.
"I love you, Anita."
"I love you too."
"But really, what do you want to eat?"
"Anything you make."
"Okay, get some rest. Should I lock the door from the outside when I go out?"
"Mhm."
Siva grabbed a cloth bag, locked the door behind him, and headed out. He walked into a Reliance Supermarket and carefully picked out everything: Ponni rice, dal, vegetables, milk, tea powder, coffee, eggs, chicken, tomatoes, onions, and green chilies. At the billing counter, he remembered Anita’s love for Dairy Milk and added that too. Outside, he bought some fruits and started walking back.
There was a strange sense of excitement in walking alone through a new place where he didn’t know the language.
Back at the flat, he organized the groceries. It was past 11:30 AM. He started cooking. As the water boiled for the rice, he prepared sambar on another burner with boiled dal and vegetables. Once the rice was drained, he fried the marinated chicken pieces.
Rice, sambar, and fried chicken—ready and steaming, perfect for the rainy weather. He went into the room. Anita was fast asleep. He reached out to touch her but stopped, simply admiring her beauty.
I was supposed to be roaming around Kanchipuram with friends right now, he thought. I never expected to be here, alone with the woman who captured my heart.
Though it felt like bliss, a growing anxiety tightened in his chest with every passing second. Will this last until the end? Every date torn from the calendar felt like a personal ache.
This is an agony. I shouldn't have agreed to this. You silly girl... if only you had agreed to a proper marriage and then come here with me, how happy we would be. No matter how much I smile in front of you, only I know the struggle within. Only I know how desperately my heart wants to never lose you.
Accept me as your husband. I will protect you from every sorrow for the rest of our lives. Will you accept me, my love? Will you bring light to my life? My heart beats for your every word. I would do anything for you.
Anita stirred and slowly opened her eyes. She saw Siva sitting there, lost in thought. She smiled.
"Wow, Siva."
"Mhm," he snapped back to reality, as if waking from a trance.
"Does our house always smell this good?"
Siva smiled. "Yes."
"You’re rocking it, Siva! What’s the menu?"
"Rice, brinjal sambar, and chicken fry."
"Awesome, I’m starving!"
"Come sit, I’ll serve you."
"So sweet, Siva!" She washed up and sat at the dining table.
As Siva served her, she insisted, "You sit too, Siva."
She took a bite of the hot rice mixed with sambar. "Siva..."
"Mhm?"
"It’s amazing!"
"Really?"
"Mhm, it’s really good."
"Thanks, Anita."
"Suppose we get married... will you always cook for me like this?"
Looking into her eyes, Siva replied softly, "Cooking for you is a blessing for me." She was moved.
"Anita."
"Mhm?"
"You said 'suppose'?"
"Mhm."
"There is no 'suppose.' We are getting married."
Anita didn’t say anything; she just smiled. By the time they finished eating, it was 2:00 PM.
"Siva, get ready."
"Where to?"
"Didn't you say you wanted to go to a movie?"
Siva’s face lit up. "Oh right! What time is the show?"
"3:00 PM."
"Super!"
They were ready in ten minutes. "Which theater?" Siva asked.
"Raagam. It’s right at the Round."
He parked the car and they got out. The crowd was moderate. "We'll get tickets, Anita."
"Mhm, the movie has been running for over a hundred days, Siva."
They sat in the theater. As Siva got lost in Mohanlal's performance, Anita found herself watching him, admiring him when he wasn't looking. By the time the movie ended and they reached the flat, the rain had started again—and so had their playful banter.
Two weeks passed as quickly as two days. They had begun to breathe each other's love, realizing they were meant for one another.
Then one day, Siva’s phone rang. It was an unknown number.
"Hello, who is this?"
"Am I speaking to Siva?"
"Yes, who are you?"
"I need to speak with you privately."
"Go ahead."
"Is anyone near you? Specifically... Anita?"
The moment the voice mentioned Anita’s name, Siva grew alert. He checked on her; she was on the terrace drying clothes.
"I’m alone. Tell me."
"My name is Vishnu."
"Mhm?"
"I was exactly where you are right now."
Siva was shocked. "What are you talking about?"
"I'm telling you the truth," Vishnu continued. "I was the one who went to see Anita as a prospective groom before you. She gave me the exact same condition she gave you. I felt the same happiness you're feeling right now."
Something shattered inside Siva. "I can't accept what you're saying."
"Don't then. I've told you the truth. Believe me and save yourself. Or don't, and let yourself be destroyed. The choice is yours."
Vishnu hung up. Siva stood there, lost in thought.
