When Shiva woke up the next morning, it was already very late. He looked around for Anitha, but she was nowhere to be seen. He sprang up and hurried out of the room.
The hall? Empty.
The kitchen? No sign of her.
"Anitha!" he called out. No answer.
Maybe she’s in the bathroom? He stood outside the door and called again. Nothing.
Panic began to set in. What do I do now?
Suddenly, hearing a sound, he looked up and his face lit up. It was Anitha. She had bathed and changed her clothes. In her hand, she held a coffee filter.
"Good morning, Shiva," she smiled.
"Where did you go? For a minute, I was lost, not knowing what to do."
"To get coffee powder for you, Shiva. I know you need your coffee in the morning."
Shiva was touched. Reaching out with both hands, he said, "Come here."
"No, thanks. I’m still tired from all the cuddling last night. I feel like I need more sleep," Anitha said, making Shiva smile.
"Shiva?"
"Mm?"
"Last night?"
"Mm?"
"Were you... safe?"
Anitha asked, and Shiva replied with his eyes—a silent yes.
'And you? Were you happy?' The words climbed up to Shiva’s throat, but he didn't let them out. Instead, he took the coffee.
"Anitha."
"Mm?"
"Any plans for today?"
"Let's go somewhere nearby, nothing too far, Shiva. We can come back and sleep."
Shiva smiled. "Where to?"
"Guruvayur."
"How long is the drive?"
"About forty-five minutes."
"Mm."
"Shower and wear a veshti (dhoti)."
"Are pants not allowed?"
"Mmhmm. You can only enter if you wear a veshti. And not just that—you have to remove your shirt before going inside."
"I see."
"Okay, Shiva, go have your bath. We can eat on the way."
He nodded and stepped into the bathroom.
He turned on the shower. As the cold water hit the floor, the warmth spread across his body was slowly extinguished, replaced by a soothing chill. Shiva closed his eyes, savoring the feeling.
The moment his eyes closed, Anitha smiled within his mind.
Were you happy last night?
As Shiva asked her this in his mind, he felt her smile suddenly vanish. Damn it. Why am I overthinking this? Why don't I just ask her directly?
Shiva.
Yes?
What kind of man are you?
Why?
Do you really need her to tell you in words whether she was happy with you or not?
Yes.
I feel pity for your state.
But isn't it based on this that she said she’d marry me?
Yes.
That’s why I’m a little unsettled.
Don't be unsettled, Shiva. In your confusion, you might say something wrong to her. When people who understand each other fight, it’s no big deal. But when people who are still trying to understand each other have even a small argument, it's magnified. It’s noticed. The one who is hurt might start seeing the other in a different light.
A different light? Meaning?
They might think: 'This person doesn't truly care for me; they only blame me when something goes wrong. Expecting love from them or loving them is a waste.'
Then what should I do?
Do your duty; do not dwell on the results.
I don't understand.
Cuddle her when you feel like it. Don't analyze how you did it.
Mm.
Besides, there is another way to find out how she feels without asking.
Excellent. What way?
It’s not rocket science. The interest she shows the next time you hold her will reveal the joy she already found.
Shiva felt a sense of peace.
"Shiva!" Anitha’s voice called out.
"What is it, Anitha?" he shouted back.
"Hurry up!"
"Coming!"
He finished his bath quickly and came out. Anitha admired him as he emerged in a crisp white shirt and white veshti.
"Shiva."
"Mm?"
"Super."
"Thanks, di." (a casual, intimate suffix)
"What? 'Di'?"
"Oh, sorry, it just came out in the flow," Shiva said, walking ahead.
Anitha felt a wave of happiness. I shouldn't delay this anymore. He was born for me. In just three days, he has filled my entire heart.
After becoming one with him last night, I feel like I've been born again. He has made me like myself. Shiva, you are a magician. You store love like a mantra within you and cast it upon me every now and then. I want to be with you forever. I'm going to take back the condition I set.
You are my Shiva now.
She got into the car. Shiva started the engine. He crossed the Thrissur Round and drove onto the Patturaikkal bridge.
"Which way, Anitha?"
"Go straight toward Poonkunnam. Keep going and you'll hit Amala Hospital."
"Mm."
"When we reach Choondal, turn left."
The car sped along. Within half an hour, they reached Guruvayur.
"Shiva."
"Mm?"
"You haven't eaten yet."
"Are you hungry?"
"No."
"Shall we eat after the darshan (prayer)?"
"Okay, come."
They waited in the long queue. As the line began to move, a natural glow of excitement stayed on both their faces, as they were both full of thoughts of each other.
As they were about to enter the inner sanctum, a security guard asked Shiva to remove his shirt. He complied. Inside, the queue grew longer. They climbed up and down the steps. They had a fulfilling prayer before Lord Guruvayurappan and stepped out.
Anitha sat down while Shiva went to get tokens and brought back payasam (sweet pudding).
"Here, Anitha, drink this."
She took a few sips and handed it back to him.
"Shiva."
"Mm?"
"They say if you pray to Guruvayurappan, the worship is only complete if you visit the Shiva temple in nearby Mammiyoor."
"Is that so? Alright, let's go."
He smiled. They stood up and began walking through the outer courtyard. Shiva watched in wonder at a spot where many small children were seated with leaves of food placed before them.
"That is Annapradakshanam, Shiva."
"What does that mean?"
"It's the first time children are fed solid rice."
"Oh."
They left the temple and entered Hotel Annapoorna. After finishing their tiffin, they walked out.
"Anitha."
"Mm?"
"Next?"
"Let's go to Mammiyoor and then back to the flat, Shiva."
"Mm."
"We can sleep and rest for a bit, then go to Sobha City Mall in the evening."
"Anitha."
"Tell me, Shiva."
"A movie, maybe?"
"Is a Malayalam movie okay?"
"Double okay!"
"Mohanlal’s Lucifer is playing. I’ve seen it already. It’s a great film. I’ll watch it again for you."
As Anitha spoke, Shiva remembered what she had said before:
'During these thirty days we are staying together, I shouldn't do anything for you, and you shouldn't do anything for me.'
Shiva smiled to himself.
